Thunderbird Resorts

Poro Point, City of San Fernando,

La Union

The finest and only five-star hotel in the Northern Philippine region. It was newly built around mid-year of 2007 and was formally opened on October the following year after almost a year of construction. It was a big boom for the people of La Union as well as the entire province of having this wonderful and awesome place to stay even just for a night of one or two, which would definitely relax you from the stress of work environment and from the buzzing chores of the day. The hotel and resort is a relaxing getaway perfectly for family, lovers, friends and anybody else. I’ve been here to this hotel and resort for thrice already, first I remember just a turn around look of the hotel, second was during the photo shoot of the Search for Miss La Union 2009, which was so unique and fabulous (blending to the beautiful ladies of La Union) from the different towns, and lastly was the wedding of my aunt, that looks like it was taken outside the country but it was taken and held in this resort, really awesome. It was such wonderful setting for a wedding to be held along the shore just a couple of minutes from the hotel itself, a lover could also come to this place just to see the setting of the sun on the horizon of the South China Sea. Can't wait to go there again.

The services were impeccable and incredibly fast in response time. I also had to admit because I experienced it already, very hospitable and respectful to all customers/clients. They served breakfast of local cuisines and fresh buko juice, hot chocolates and among others and also a mojitos at the bar. Food was so delightful at their inhouse restaurant. Bon appetite!

Overall the resort was built in a Mediterranean style and looks influenced from Santorini Islands of Greece. Fabuloso!!! And, surrounding the hotel were great landscapes, garden of flowers and vermuda grass. The chairs are comfortable at the main lobby, from king/queen beds to shower room...really beautiful. And to top , the view of the China Sea is fantastic and manificient, it really amazes you especially the sun that sets down over the horizon.

Getting there

If ever you are passing through the La Union area, I highly recommend a visit to Thunderbird Resorts located at Poro Point, San Fernando City. It is just 2 kilometers away from the National Road. And around 430 kilometers from Metro Manila. By land, bus/van coming from Metro Manila via Laoag, Abra or Vigan are great transport. By air, by domestic airlines bound for San Fernando City, La Union is great too, for escaping the hectic traffic in the road.

Pagudpud island, Ilocos Norte

" Largest Island "

It is considered the largest island in the Philippines. The hills and mountains are luxuriant, the valleys productive. It lies 45 miles north of Laoag City, the provincial capital, and about 350 miles north of Manila — about the equal distance between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. Creeks, streams and waterfalls splash the landscape and spill into the South China Sea. All around, the ocean and sky are awash in varying shades of blue.
Pagudpud Beach, 2 hours north of Laoag City, has powder-white sand, but it’s hard to tell which is bluer: the sky or the sea. While you are making up your mind, you might also consider a stop in Pasuquin, where the famous biscocho (Ilocos biscuit) is a favorite take-home delicacy for local visitors. But don’t forget to check your watch, for while you play in the waters of Pagudpud, you may not notice how much time you have spent on these delightful shores, which are at the very tip of Luzon Island.

Cape Bolinao Lighthouse

101-year-old lighthouse is Bolinao’s landmark

FOR 101 years now, the Cape Bolinao lighthouse stands proud atop Punta Piedra Point
in Barangay Patar in Bolinao, Pangasinan, guiding ships and vessels cruising the international passage along the South China Sea. Nestled amid trees, the lighthouse was built in 1905 by Filipino, British and American engineers. It is one of the five major lighthouses in the country and the second tallest, next to the Cape Bojeador lighthouse in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. It has become a prominent landmark that tourists frequent. The 30.78-meter (101-foot) tower provides a panoramic view of the blue sea and white beaches, offshore reefs and rock formations, as well as rolling verdant hills. Once in a while, a passing vessel dots the sea, an international route of vessels going to Hong Kong, Japan and the United States. The 140-step winding stairway of the tower leads to the illumination room, 76.2 m above sea level. According to Pedro Honrada, the lighthouse’s head keeper, the lantern is visible 44 kilometers away, guiding seafarers (led toward this area by a lighthouse in Zambales) toward the lighthouse in Poro Point, La Union. The late Bolinao historian Catalino Catanaoan said the original light machine was manufactured in England, while the lantern, with three wicks and chimneys, was imported from France. “Filipino machinists were able to copy the original [when they repaired it]. The light machine is rotated by a system of gears like that of a big clock with a pendulum of weights, winded and suspended with steel cable,” he said.
